Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Michael Katsidis
Money Line: Marquez -300; Katsidis +220
WBO Lightweight Title
Juan Manuel Marquez (51-5-1, 37 KOs) is still one of the best at his craft despite his 37 years of age. It’s an easy statement to overlook considering Marquez has won only three of his last five fights. But when those two losses come to pound-for-pound elite Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, Marquez certainly may not be getting his just due. Two wins over former lightweight champion Juan Diaz have put Marquez atop a weight class for the third time in his Hall of Fame career. Explosiveness and grit have not only endeared Marquez to a nation of Mexican fans, it’s also earned him respect amongst boxing fans across the globe.
One would have to travel the globe in order to find the opponent for Juan Manuel Marquez this Saturday, Australia’s Michael Katsidis (27-2, 22 KOs). Known for his warrior spirit in the ring, Katsidis is a perfect compliment of style to Mexico’s Marquez. Neither man can be in a bad fight so expectations are running high. At 30 years old, Katsidis not only has youth on his side, but he has fought all ten years of his professional career at lightweight. After back-to-back losses, although thrilling, to Joel Casamayor and Juan Diaz, Michael Katsidis has rolled off four consecutive victories. Even though Marquez isn’t the guy you would want to slug it out with, chances are that Katsidis will bring it at him anyway.

Can Michael Katsidis beat Juan Manuel Marquez?
Because Mexico’s Juan Manuel Marquez has perched on the upper rung of the pound for pound list for years, most dismiss any notion that other than elite fighters the boxer known as “Dinamita” should have no problem with someone like Michael “The Great Katsidis.
Watch Marquez vs Katsidis Live Stream on November 27 at Las Vegas covered live by HBO PPV.
They would be wrong.
Elite fighters and their subsequent reputations are built on years of work and trial through fire.
Marquez did so for two decades and now enjoys the fruits of those labors. But some say it’s Katsidis turn.
Katsidis (27-2, 22 KOs) will try to topple WBO and WBA lightweight world champion Marquez (51-5-1, 37 KOs) from his perch of greatness on Saturday Nov. 27, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The Aussie who now lives in Las Vegas has been waiting for this moment. HBO will televise the altercation.
Few boxers have been so willing to prove their technical prowess like Marquez. In September 2009 he eagerly agreed to fight Floyd Mayweather despite a size, reach, speed and power disadvantage.
“It’s my opportunity to show what I can do,” said Marquez, who though soundly beaten by Mayweather emerged with his reputation intact. “I love to prove I can fight the best.”
Marquez, 37, may be the best technical boxer on the planet who strategically dissects opponents like a modern-day General Pancho Villa might have pierced enemy encampments 100 years ago during the Mexican Revolution.
“He’s so smart in the ring,” said Sugar Shane Mosley. “His defense is great.”
All those tools will be necessary against Katsidis a warrior in his own right who never saw a brawl he didn’t like. Who can forget his fight against Joel Casamayor in 2008 when he knocked Casamayor out of the ring then was knocked out himself in the 10th round.
Katsidis, 30, lost his brother Stathi Katsidis, who was found dead. Regardless, the prizefighter decided to continue his quest for the undisputed lightweight world championship.
“The fight will go on! I will do this for Stathi, my family and myself,” stated Katsidis whose brother Stathi was a champion horse race jockey in Australia.
Few are surprised.
Six months ago Katsidis traveled to London, England to face undefeated Kevin Mitchell and was expected to lose. Instead the prizefighter of Greek heritage proceeded to bully and dominate the British fighter in a mere three rounds. It was another impressive showing.
Katsidis now faces his toughest opponent ever in the wizard of boxing Marquez. But maybe the time is right for the Aussie. The Mexican boxer has become more compelled to entertain boxing fans with a more aggressive style that leaves him open for massive counters.
Marquez is clearly one of the best fighters pound for pound but against Joel Casamayor, Juan Diaz and Manny Pacquiao, the Mexican boxer has shown a willingness to dispense with a safety-first style. The fighter known as “Dinamita” has opened up offensively to look for knockouts rather than simply points victories. By opening up he is also leaving himself vulnerable to counter shots.
It’s something that Katsidis will be shooting for.
Other bouts
Also on the same Las Vegas card will be WBC welterweight titleholder Andre Berto (26-0, 20 KOs) defending against Mexico City’s Freddy Hernandez (29-1, 20 KOs) in a bout scheduled for 12 rounds.
Panama’s Celestino Caballero (34-2, 23 KOs), a tall former junior featherweight and featherweight world champion, was unable to entice Puerto Rico’s Juan Manuel Lopez or Cuba’s Yuri Gamboa to fight so he’s moving up to the junior lightweight division. Caballero faces Jason “The American Boy” Litzau (27-2, 21 KOs) who is eager to prove he deserves another world title shot.

Marquez vs Katsidis Live on SOLARtv and Solar Sports
Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez (51-5-1, 37 KOs) returns to the ring on Sunday as he faces Michael “The Great” Katsidis (27-2-0, 22 KOs) in a 12-round fight for the WBA and WBO lightweight titles. After losing to Floyd “Money” Mayweather last year, Marquez bounced back nicely with an inspiring performance over Juan Diaz. The Mexican warrior has been itching for another shot at Pacquiao since he lost a painfully close split-decision to the Pacman in 2008. Marquez knows that a good performance over Katsidis will get him closer to a third fight against Pacquiao.

Katsidis on the other hand is coming of four straight victories since suffering back-to-back defeats at the hands of Joel Casamayor and Diaz. The Australian fighter who is of Greek descent has ascended the ranks in the boxing world with his crowd-pleasing all-action brand of fighting which is a joy to watch. He is now boxing’s premier blood and guts warrior, an honor that used to belong to the late Arturo Gatti. A win over the aging Mexican warrior will undoubtedly place Katsidis’ name on the short list of Pacquiao’s possible opponents.
“Given the styles of both fighters, Marquez versus Katsidis has Fight of the Year written all over it,” said Oscar de la Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions. “Marquez looked better than ever against Juan Diaz in his last fight and Katsidis is in top form coming off of a big knockout win over Kevin Mitchell; so boxing fans will be in for a treat.”
Andre Berto (26-0-0, 20 KOs), a Haitian-born welterweight, will be fighting in the undercard against Freddy Hernandez (29-1-0, 20 KOs). Berto has also been in discussions pertaining to Pacquiao’s next opponent and he will use this fight to catapult him to a possible match against the pound-for-pound king. Hernandez is a largely unknown entity but he has beaten a few good fighters and should be a tough challenge for Berto.
The undercard will also feature a fight between Celestino Caballero (34-2-0, 23 KOs) versus Jason Litzau (27-2-0, 21 KOS) and Nate “Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell (33-6-1, 25 KOs) versus Walter Estrada (37-13-1, 25 KOs).
Warriors: Marquez vs Katsidis will be aired on November 28 at 1 pm, via satellite, on SOLARtv and Solar Sports, with a replay on Solar Sports at 7 pm.

Marquez vs. Katsidis: Is Juan the next to get knocked out?
WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (51-5-1, 37 KO’s) will be defending his titles against WBO lightweight interim champion Michael Katsidis (27-2, 22 KO’s) this Saturday night at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is a bout that most boxing experts feel that the 37-year-old Marquez should win given his greater experience, better talent and superior counter punching ability.
Watch Marquez vs. Katsidis Live Stream!
However, Katsidis is seven years younger at 37, with better hand speed and superior power. Because of those advantages, you have to give Katsidis is a real chance at winning this fight. He’s peaking as a fighter right now, whereas Marquez appears to be showing signs of deterioration.
Marquez has been in seven consecutive hard fights in which he’s absorbed a lot of punishment in terms of head shots. Marquez lost a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last year, and in his last bout, Marquez defeated Juan Diaz by a 12 round decision but faded late in the fight in July of this year.
Diaz took the fight to Marquez in the last three rounds of the bout and connected with a lot of head shots. Marquez is clearly showing signs of wear and tear on his body, and Katsidis might have enough power, speed and youth to take out Marquez.
Katsidis destroyed top lightweight Kevin Mitchell in a third round blowout in his last fight in May. Katsidis looked like a little junior middleweight in that fight, and appeared to have a considerable size advantage over Mitchell come fight time.
If Katsidis rehydrates up to 150+, he could have a huge advantage over the smaller Marquez. With Katsidis already being the bigger puncher, having a big size advantage over Marquez will be one more thing that the Australian has going for him in this fight.
Katsidis also has the superior stamina, as he seems to be able fight hard late in his fights without tiring. Marquez might not make through this fight in one piece if Katsidis is firing on all cylinders.
Marquez is hoping to beat Katsidis and look good in doing to in order to get a third fight with Manny Pacquiao, but this could be the end of any dreams for that fight happening if Marquez gets beaten decisively by Katsidis.

Marquez, 37, had been thinking of moving up to the light welterweight division and challenging World Boxing Association light welterweight champion Amir Khan, but Marquez has put that fight off for now so that he can defend his title against one of the most exciting fighters in the lightweight division in 30-year-old Australian Katsidis.

Marquez was hoping to get a third fight with Manny Pacquiao. However, Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank thinks that Marquez needs to prove himself against welterweights before he’ll consider putting Pacquiao in with him.
If Marquez will win this will be the pathway for him to challenge ‘PACMAN’ for the pound for pound king.
