Mexican three-time world champion Erik “Terrible” Morales conducted a public training session on Wednesday at the Otomi Ceremonial Center in Temoaya, Mexico State. He’s been focusing for more than two months on training for his upcoming bout against Argentinian Marcos “Chino” Maidana on April 9th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Morales hopes to become the first Mexican fighter to win four world titles in different divisions from super bantamweight, featherweight and super featherweight, he now has his sights on the WBA super lightweight interim world title. Erik is in good physical and mental shape which is very obviously important for this big fight. “It’s a great fight and I’m going to give my best because it’s all or nothing. Maida is young and strong, I will use all my experience with intelligence and strategy,” said Morales.

Marcos Maidana Media Workout (Photos)
My plans while driving down Spring Mountain road in Las Vegas, Nevada were pretty simple. I was hoping to catch up with lightweight contender Sharif Bogere at the Pound 4 Pound Gym and later hit up Roger Mayweather and Floyd’s gym just down the street to gather a few sound bytes or gym shots from each man. I was a little late in trying to catch Bogere and Mayweather was nowhere to be found but I was pleasantly surprised when Pound 4 Pound co-owner Rich Barrientes advised me that former interim WBA junior welterweight champion Marcos Maidana was in town and training out of his facility.
Maidana is closing in on an April 9th showdown with Erik Morales at the MGM Grand and by now Las Vegas is like a second home to him. He often trains out of this city and this fight with ‘El Terrible’ marks his 3rd fight in the area in his last four contests. I spoke to the Argentinean’s advisor Sebastian Contursi upon the team’s arrival and reassured that everything is running smoothly for this particular contest.
Maidana arrived in the city on March 15th after a four and a half week stint in Mexico City. The 27-year old had initially agreed to work with excellent strategist Nacho Beristain but that was a move that was frowned upon by his chief fighter Juan Manuel Marquez and they had to part ways. Hours later Maidana would link up with veteran Rudy Perez, known best for days with Marco Antonio Barrera, and the Mexican coach could be seen on this day overseeing Maidana’s every move.
Maidana is coming off of a heartbreaking decision loss to Amir Khan last December inside of the Mandalay Bay. In that fight Maidana was floored in the first round from a stinging body shot but rose valiantly and worked his way back into the fight as he staged a hellacious late-round rally that saw him come up just short.
Maidana is the heavy favorite to defeat Morales, who had his best success in the late 90′s and mid-2000′s while campaigning between 122 and 130 pounds. If successful, Maidana said he would love a rematch with Khan but will be eyeing all options at 140 pounds.

Khan defeats Maidana via Unanimous Decision
WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan defeated Marcos Maidana moments ago by a 12 round decision at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino after surviving a 10th round scare in which Khan looked out on his feet. Khan spent most of the fight running and hardly looking like the next Manny Pacquiao. Khan fought like a chicken with his head cut off most of the time just running and stinking up the joint. Mayweather-es he was not.

I had the almost a draw with Khan barely winning. However, I saw nothing in this performance that would tell me that Khan will beat Timothy Bradley or that he deserves a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. For the most part, Khan reminded me a lot of Paulie Malignggi, but a more running version. I don’t think Khan is the next big start that his trainer Freddie Roach is dreaming about.
I think HBO needs to push for a rematch with a different referee working the fight, because Joe Cortez shouldn’t have deducted a point from Maidana.

Khan vs Maidana Complete Fight Results
Amir Khan (24-1-0-17KO) last night barely escaped with a very close unanimous decision over the tough Argentinean, Marcos Maidana (29-2-0, 27KO). Khan dropped Maidana in the first round via two vicious shots to the liver area but Maidana avoided an early ending of the fight by recovering nicely as the fight progressed. In round 10 he rocked Khan pretty badly and almost turned the table on Khan. The scores were 114-111, 114-111 and 113-112. Khan retained his WBA Super lightweight title.

In the supporting main event, Victor Ortiz (28-2-2, 22KO) knocked down a very determined Lamont Peterson (28-1-1,14KO) twice in round thee but was unable to continue the assault and Peterson was able to recover nicely and almost stole a victory from Ortiz. The judges scores were 95-93 (Peterson) and 94-94, 94-94 making the fight a majority draw.
Joan Guzman (31-0-1, 18KO) kept his unbeaten record via a 2nd round TKO over Jason Davis (11-8-1,3KO) by softening his young opponent with two low blows in round 1. The fouls apparently weaken Davis and in round two he had nothing left to fight. Davis’ corner threw in the towel when they saw that their man had nothing to answer Guzman.
Heavyweight Seth Mitchell (20-0-1,14KO) knocked out Taurus Sykes ( 25-7-1, 7KO) in round 5. Mitchell dropped a very tired Sykes with a right hook that did not even solidly connect and Sykes simply collapse from fatigue.
Lightweight Sharif Bogere 18-0-0, 11KO) of New York, via Uganda won a clear unanimous decision over Chris Fernandez ( 19-111-1, 11KO)of Salt Lake City. The scores were all 80-72. Bogere came up the ring wearing a full blown lion skin complete with the lion’s head while Fernandez showed off his Native American heritage by coming in with a replica of a Native American Indian head dress.
In a battle between two Las Vegas resident super lightweights, Jessie Vargas (13-0-0, 7KO) won over Ramon Montano (17-9-2, 2KO) via unanimous decision. The scores were 78-74,79-73 and 80-72.
Jamie Kavanaugh of Hollywood, CA (4-0-0, 2KO) barely broke a sweat in stopping an outclassed Jacob Thorton ( 2-2-0) of St Louis, Mo. Kavanaugh took a mere 44 seconds to end the fight.
Rudy Caballero ( 6-0-0, 4KO) of Coachella Valley, CA kept his record clean via a unanimous decision over Robert Guillen (5-9-3, 1KO) of Glendale, Arizona. The scores from the three judges were all 40-35.
In the curtain raiser, Alfonso Blanco (2-0-0, 1KO) of Caracas, Venezuela won his 2nd fight in as many starts by scoring a TKO over Gustavo Medina of Eloy, Arizona at 2:45 of the 3rd round.

Khan vs Maidana could be like Chavez vs Taylor
In a recent interview prior to the Saul ”Canelo” Alvarez fight, Golden Boy president and former 10 time world champion in six different weight classes Oscar De La Hoya had a few words regarding the upcoming match between regular WBA super lightweight champion Amir Khan and Interim WBA super lightweight champ Marcos Maidana.

”This fight will be a tremendous war, it could be the fight of the year, it will be an intriguing match up, the public wanted to see this fight for so long and now we finally have it here,” Said De La Hoya.
”The fight has all the ingredients of a classic, the boxer versus the puncher, the side to side movement against the straight forward fighter, it could be like Julio Cesar Chavez vs Meldrik Taylor when they fought back in the 90s, but Amir told me that he is going to stay in front of Maidana and is going to trade punches with him, so we’ll see what happens,” concluded Oscar.
