Khan defeats Maidana via Unanimous Decision
WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan defeated Marcos Maidana moments ago by a 12 round decision at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino after surviving a 10th round scare in which Khan looked out on his feet. Khan spent most of the fight running and hardly looking like the next Manny Pacquiao. Khan fought like a chicken with his head cut off most of the time just running and stinking up the joint. Mayweather-es he was not.

I had the almost a draw with Khan barely winning. However, I saw nothing in this performance that would tell me that Khan will beat Timothy Bradley or that he deserves a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. For the most part, Khan reminded me a lot of Paulie Malignggi, but a more running version. I don’t think Khan is the next big start that his trainer Freddie Roach is dreaming about.
I think HBO needs to push for a rematch with a different referee working the fight, because Joe Cortez shouldn’t have deducted a point from Maidana.

Khan vs Maidana Complete Fight Results
Amir Khan (24-1-0-17KO) last night barely escaped with a very close unanimous decision over the tough Argentinean, Marcos Maidana (29-2-0, 27KO). Khan dropped Maidana in the first round via two vicious shots to the liver area but Maidana avoided an early ending of the fight by recovering nicely as the fight progressed. In round 10 he rocked Khan pretty badly and almost turned the table on Khan. The scores were 114-111, 114-111 and 113-112. Khan retained his WBA Super lightweight title.

In the supporting main event, Victor Ortiz (28-2-2, 22KO) knocked down a very determined Lamont Peterson (28-1-1,14KO) twice in round thee but was unable to continue the assault and Peterson was able to recover nicely and almost stole a victory from Ortiz. The judges scores were 95-93 (Peterson) and 94-94, 94-94 making the fight a majority draw.
Joan Guzman (31-0-1, 18KO) kept his unbeaten record via a 2nd round TKO over Jason Davis (11-8-1,3KO) by softening his young opponent with two low blows in round 1. The fouls apparently weaken Davis and in round two he had nothing left to fight. Davis’ corner threw in the towel when they saw that their man had nothing to answer Guzman.
Heavyweight Seth Mitchell (20-0-1,14KO) knocked out Taurus Sykes ( 25-7-1, 7KO) in round 5. Mitchell dropped a very tired Sykes with a right hook that did not even solidly connect and Sykes simply collapse from fatigue.
Lightweight Sharif Bogere 18-0-0, 11KO) of New York, via Uganda won a clear unanimous decision over Chris Fernandez ( 19-111-1, 11KO)of Salt Lake City. The scores were all 80-72. Bogere came up the ring wearing a full blown lion skin complete with the lion’s head while Fernandez showed off his Native American heritage by coming in with a replica of a Native American Indian head dress.
In a battle between two Las Vegas resident super lightweights, Jessie Vargas (13-0-0, 7KO) won over Ramon Montano (17-9-2, 2KO) via unanimous decision. The scores were 78-74,79-73 and 80-72.
Jamie Kavanaugh of Hollywood, CA (4-0-0, 2KO) barely broke a sweat in stopping an outclassed Jacob Thorton ( 2-2-0) of St Louis, Mo. Kavanaugh took a mere 44 seconds to end the fight.
Rudy Caballero ( 6-0-0, 4KO) of Coachella Valley, CA kept his record clean via a unanimous decision over Robert Guillen (5-9-3, 1KO) of Glendale, Arizona. The scores from the three judges were all 40-35.
In the curtain raiser, Alfonso Blanco (2-0-0, 1KO) of Caracas, Venezuela won his 2nd fight in as many starts by scoring a TKO over Gustavo Medina of Eloy, Arizona at 2:45 of the 3rd round.

Amir Khan can put away big-puncher Marcos Maidana
Familiarity can breed rank predictions. So what are we to make of the assessment of Victor Ortiz, the explosive Californian whose crystal ball reveals a regal triumph for Amir Khan over Marcos Maidana in the early hours of Sunday?
WatchKhan vs Maidana Live Online Stream!
Ortiz lost to Khan as an amateur in the junior Olympics and to a cut eye against Maidana 18 months ago in their Los Angeles barnburner. His bout against Lamont Peterson on the undercard in Las Vegas is the latest step in the rehabilitation of a career that might cut across Khan’s again.
“I wish I had listened to my trainer,” Ortiz said. “Other than a big right hand Maidana has nothing. Khan is way too fast for him and, in my opinion, will win easily.”
Ortiz was speaking outside a homespun gym in the Las Vegas hinterland used for the final workout before Thursday’s head-to-head.
Inside, Khan and trainer Freddie Roach were engaged in the violent ballet that is pad work. The savage dexterity unleashed by Khan on Roach’s protected torso did little to undermine the claims of Ortiz.
Maidana was more laboured, more circumspect in his pre-fight cameo. He had first use of the ring and adjoining floor space but elected to give little away, simulating not detonating that signature right hand. There is about Maidana a sinister austerity reinforced by reticence. “I’m a man of few words,” he said.
This quiet assurance radiates menace and was persuasive enough until Khan turned up.
Khan’s arrival was the signal for Maidana to split. Not a word was exchanged as he slipped through the door, leaving the stage to Khan. The ritual wrapping of the hands executed by Roach permitted a brief exchange with reporters and a more prolonged conversation with Richard Schaefer, chief executive of promoters Golden Boy.
The snapshot was revealing. Schaefer deferred to Khan. He crouched respectfully and whispered a series of procedural updates in his ear.
There was news of the great Oscar de la Hoya’s arrival, and inquiries made about the treatment Khan was receiving at the fight hotel. Khan absorbed the information, nodding occasionally.
The power relation between the two could not have been clearer. Moments earlier Khan had spoken about his growing maturity, about the improvement in his game since teaming up with Roach two years ago. The snatched exchange with Schaefer substantiated his claims.
Khan is no longer the adolescent prospect without a voice. He has claimed ownership of his own show. His willingness to take responsibility augments the technical gifts that make him arguably the most exciting British boxer in a generation.
His mother presented him with a cake bearing the inscription ‘Fabulous Las Vegas’ to celebrate his 24th birthday. In all other respects Khan is mummy’s boy no more.
The session closed with a gathering in the ring of the ‘Khan army’, a force expanding beyond its Bolton roots to include members from as far south as London. This is not yet, in scale, a phenomenon to match the tribal allegiance commanded by Ricky Hatton. But it is a start.
Khan has yet to recapture the imagination of the British public in the manner he did in 2004 when the Olympic final against Cuban Mario Kindelan attracted a terrestrial television audience of more than seven million. The Maidana fight is potentially his passport back to the heart of British sport.
Roach is sincere in his belief that he has an exceptional talent in his gym, one with the potential to outstrip the achievements of the remarkable Filipino, Manny Pacquiao. Khan takes the hyperbole with a bag of salt. With each step forward he narrows his focus. The earthquake that was Breidis Prescott taught him the folly of looking too far ahead.
“I have come a long way these past two years since working with Freddie. I have learned to be professional and to think about things a lot more. This fight’s going to take me to the next level.
“A lot of people say Amir avoids punchers but I am taking on the biggest puncher in the light-welterweight division. This fight will answer a lot of questions.”
It will do more than that. This fight has the potential to make Prescott disappear.
