Pacquiao vs Margarito: Jay Nady is Needed To Referee

By Admin  //  Pacquiao vs Margarito Fight  //  No Comments

jaynady Pacquiao vs Margarito: Jay Nady is Needed To RefereeI’ve heard nothing new on the selection of a referee for the Antonio Margarito-Manny Pacquiao bout Nov. 13 in Cowboys Stadium but one obvious solution would be for Texas to ask Nevada to lend lease either Kenny Bayless, Tony Weeks or Vic Drakulich for the job.

Then again, would Nevada then be somewhat bestowing its imprimatur on Margarito, a fighter that state’s commission saw fit not to grant a boxing license to?

Some of the haughty NSAC commissioners who weren’t ready to give Margarito a second chance until he got clearance and some absolution from California might look askance at that.

But the Nevada boxing board does not “own” its officials.

On the other hand, Nevada officials, refs and judges, have quite often worked outside the Silver State. In North Dakota, for example, promoters have been able to bring Nevada rules, regulation and personnel to their shows.

There has also been numerous times when Nevada refs and judges spanned the globe working title bouts for one governing body or another.

Margarito-Pacquiao is for the WBC super welterweight crown.

The obvious but problematic choice in Texas for the second Pacman bout there this year is Laurence Cole, son of longtime state regulator Dickie Cole.

There are those who feel Cole is a bit erratic.

The Coles have always been closely associated with the WBC and sister organization NABF.

You certainly could not bring in a Mexican ref with landsman Margarito battling the Pinoy Idol.

Reliable Rafael Ramos, a Texan of Puerto Rican got the nod and did a more than capable job for the Clottey-Pacquiao, but I doubt he’ll be granted two such plums in one year.

I’ll be accused of favoritism for saying so since we are fraternity brothers (Alpha Tau Omega) and were boxing teammates for the University of Nevada, Wolf Pack, but Big Jay Nady might be a good choice given the Pacquiao side’s real concerns that Margarito will play rough and tumble.

Margarito dwarfs Little Manny but Big jay dwarfs Margarito and he is a no nonsense ref.

Nady’s nephew Xavier plays for the Chicago Cubs and was formerly with the Pirates, Yankees and Mets.

His uncle was a fearseome football player and boxing heavyweight for the UNR Wolf Pack back in “the Marley era.”

Pacquiao Must Avoid Rival’s Trap

By Admin  //  Pacquiao vs Margarito Fight  //  1 Comment

pacquiao 119 Pacquiao Must Avoid Rival’s TrapFreddie Roach wants Manny Pacquiao to turn Antonio Margarito into a virtual punching bag on Nov. 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.

In another sizzling session at the Shape Up Boxing Gym on Naguillan Road on Friday afternoon, Roach and Pacquiao continued to exchange notes on how to beat Margarito with the master emphasizing movement and the pupil acknowledging it.

“Don’t stay in front of him because he will hit you,” Roach told the Filipino pound-for pound king in between hitting the mitts.

Roach said Margarito will invite Pacquiao into a trap by giving him the green light to unleash combinations but Pacquiao has to be extra-careful after doing so because Margarito will counter as soon as he unloads.

Pacquiao did what he was told but the student added another dimension to the game plan, showing his teacher how to cleverly evade punches while hitting with pin-point accuracy.

“Good, Manny,” said Roach, whose accent is on preventing Margarito from loading as much as he possibly could.

“Don’t take two punches in order to land three,” said Roach, stressing that Pacquiao can easily win the scheduled 12-round fight for the vacant World Boxing Council super-welterweight crown without taking punishment from the Mexican mauler.

“Move, move away,” hollered Roach as Pacquiao wisely switched punching positions, spots where he could strike Margarito cleanly on the head and body.

“He will fall for you,” said Roach, assuring Pacquiao that the slow-footed Margarito will always find himself in an awkward position to be struck by one of Pacquiao’s power shots.

Pacquiao did a total of 13 rounds with the mitts, taking a break only after the 12th round.

Before reporting to the gym, Pacquiao did his morning roadwork in a rugged portion of a village located off the beaten path.

Since Pacquiao is scheduled to hold his second sparring session on Saturday, he will jog at Burnham Park.

Pacquiao actually went four rounds with Glen Tapia, a Dominican Republic native from New Jersey instead of Michael Medina and Medina said the session was intense and Tapia gave a good account of himself.

Pacquiao vs. Margarito: Early Fight Predictions

Pacquiao Margarito TR shoot 100901 004a 300x193 Pacquiao vs. Margarito: Early Fight PredictionsWith still over two months until Manny “The Mexicutioner” Pacquiao steps into the path of the “Tijuana Tornado” at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas predictions have been starting to roll in.

Most see the fight going the way of Pacquiao.

Ted “The Bull” Sares of Bad Left Hook sees the fight as a back and forth battle with the speed of Pacquiao trying to find openings around the heavy hands of Margarito. Ultimately, Sares sees the speed catching up to Margarito and a late Pacquiao victory.

“Speed will be the critical variable in this fight, Sares wrote. “And Manny has the speed (and skills to go with it). But before he prevails with a 10th or 11th round stoppage, he will be rocked several times by a stalking Margo using his heavy hands. Around the 7th or 8th, I see a facially bruised and puffed up Manny finally asserting himself but not nearly as easily as he did with Cotto.”

There are also those writers who are not only predicting a tough fight for Pacquiao but also envisioning the upset.

Chuy Marco of Now Boxing sees the fight playing out similar to Margarito’s fight against Miguel Cotto, a match which started strongly for Cotto, who dominated the early rounds, but was ultimately worn down and knocked out by the persistent Margarito.

“The strategy that Team Pacquiao, specifically Freddie Roach is trying to use of dehydrating the fighters or draining them will not work on this fight because Margarito can easily make 151-pounds catchweight,” Marco wrote.

“The smile and confidence on Pacquiao during the press conference was almost disrespectful to his opponent. Margarito will wipe the smile off of his face for sure when they step in the boxing ring at Cowboys stadium. Remember, the Pacman has never had someone who will move forward to him, everyone he fought was scared to push him back, Margarito fears no man in that ring and he runs from nobody.”

Outside of the pundits and the pencil pushers, Pacquiao’s old nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez has made a prediction on the fight. Marquez, who fought Pacquiao twice to a draw and a split decision loss (both controversial), also sees the speed of Pacquiao being the difference in the fight.

“Like Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, David Diaz, Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey before him, Margarito is expected to have a hard time coping up with Pacquiao’s quickness and ring savvy, according to Marquez,” wrote RCJ of GMA News.

“Never mind that he and Margarito are both of Mexican descent, but Marquez is definitely going to bet where the money is.”

The editors at Boxing Dispatch also see the fight going the way of Pacman. Margarito showed considerable rust in his last fight, against Roberto Garcia, and while it was only a tune-up, a jump from Garcia to Pacquiao is going to feel like moving from a soapbox derby to the Indianapolis 500. If we compare the Pacquiao-Margarito fight to the Cotto-Margarito fight, we have to factor in the speed of Pacquiao and the question of whether Margarito was hitting Cotto with what essentially amounted to a cast.

Pacquiao should bring Margarito down from an F5 tornado to a light breeze and we predict a knockout within 10 rounds.

We are curious to know what the readers think the outcome of Pacquiao-Margarito will be and how the fight will play out. Feel free to vote or leave comments.

Manny Pacquiao
It’s nice to be back at Cowboys Stadium. I want to say thanks to all the fans. I’m not only concerned for Filipinos but all boxing fans. We want the fans happy to see our performance November 13th. Antonio Margarito will work hard. It is not my intention to fight another Mexican but these things happen.

Antonio Margarito

It’s time to put Mexico back on a winning streak against Manny Pacquiao. This is not a rain but a big tornado. Freddie Roach made a name for himself using Manny Pacquiao and after this fight everyone will know Roberto Garcia. This is for Mexico. I’m bringing back the title!

Roberto Garcia (Margarito trainer)

10 weeks to go before the fight. I will prepare him (Margarito) to win this fight and put a beating on Manny Pacquiao. Manny Pacquiao is a great fighter and great person but between now and the fight November 13th we can not be friends – we are enemies. We were friendly just to get through the press tour. We can be friends after the fight.

Freddie Roach (Pacquiao trainer)

It’s going to be a big fight in the big house (Cowboys Stadium). The Tornado will be downsized to a tropical storm. Don’t miss it. Thank you.

Mark Taffet (HBO PPV president)
