Pacquiao vs Mosley: Comparing the Knockout Power

By Admin  //  Pacquiao vs. Mosley  //  1 Comment

A week before the May 7th showdown between Welterweights Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38KO) versus ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39KO), we take a look at the key points for each fighter and examine scenarios in which a victory is possible. Today we have a comparison based on the power they possess in each hand.

In his hayday, Shane Mosley was a feared puncher who had speed and velocity on his punches aside from devastating knockout power. The last time we saw it however was over two years ago when he physically dismantled disgraced boxer Antonio Margarito. Still, Mosley packs a whallop in his shots and is easily the strongest puncher Pacquiao will have faced so far. Perhaps the most glaring question would be is if he can sustain that type of speed and power throughout the entire 12 rounds as Pacquiao may look to drag Shane into deep waters. Shane’s recent contests against Floyd Mayweather and Sergio Mora suggest that he may just fade in the later rounds for this one. Mosley’s best punch is the overhand right and if it’s fast enough to catch Floyd Mayweather, who has the best defense in the game, it’s fast enough to catch Pacquiao.

On the other hand, Pacquiao doesn’t have that ‘one-punch’ knockout power that he possessed in the lower weight classes. Contrary to popular belief, his power hasn’t carried on well in the higher weight class. It’s not his fault however, it’s that these fighters in the Welterweight division have better punch resistance. I’m not saying Pacquiao is a weak puncher by any means. The man has bad intentions with each shot and he throws nearly a thousand of them every fight – most of which do land. Pacquiao’s best weight however is still 140 lbs despite making easy work of Dela Hoya, Cotto, Clottey and Margarito. What Pacquiao does have however, is volume punching and with just the right amount of power he overwhelms and suffocates his opponents producing the TKO’s and KO’s we’ve seen him collect over the past few years. This is also due largely in part to his vastly improved right hand.

Therein lies the difference between the two fighters, Mosley can end the fight in a single punch and Pacquiao will force you to quit on your stool with the endless pressure – accurate pressure at that. At this point, I don’t think Shane will be able to carry his power into the later rounds, as we saw in the Mayweather fight. And Pacquiao may as well wait for him to tire out before picking him apart. Pacquiao has made a career showcasing fight ending flurries and he gets more accurate every time out. Both fighters have awesome power in their own right. The question here isn’t who packs more of it, it’s who will be most effective with it.

Because of Mosley’s big overhand right, he has that mystique surrounding him that he can turn the fight around at any moment, and thus this gives him the proverbial ‘puncher’s chance’. But at 39 years of age, he’s been in the sport a long time and his decline has reared its ugly face in his last few fights. The chance is slim and father time is definitely not on his side. Stamina will be a huge factor and once Mosley runs out of it, it’s cue for Pacquiao to put the pedal to the metal and get him out of there.

On the flipside, physically, Pacquiao has also shown some slight decline but this is due to his climb in weight and not necessarily to time’s inevitable effect on a fighter. Yes, he is a step slower but that’s not saying much as he is still faster by a mile than any fighter he is pitted against, both in hand speed and on his feet. What Pacquiao has done well is that he’s balanced his declining physical gifts with better technique and ring intelligence making his combinations more accurate and thus increasing the effectiveness of his power.

Expect Mosley to look for a big shot to end the fight, he may have trouble finding it though. Pacquiao’s in and out style will make it difficult for him. He has to time Pacquiao on his way in and launch a counter punch.

Pacquiao just needs to keep doing what he’s been doing and that’s launch intelligent and accurate combinations at different angles. It’s when he does this that he produces knockouts. They say the punches you can’t see are the ones that do the most damage. You can bet your house that he’ll catch Mosley with more than one of these when they finally throw down.

Shawn Porter Says Manny Pacquiao Is Ready for Mosley

By Admin  //  Pacquiao vs. Mosley  //  No Comments

pacquiaovsmosleyposter400x400 300x300 Shawn Porter Says Manny Pacquiao Is Ready for MosleyUndefeated Akron, Ohio-based prospect Shawn Porter (18-0, 13 KO) was in camp with Manny Pacquiao in November 2009, serving as the Filipino icon’s chief sparring partner for a fight with Miguel Cotto. In that fight, Pacquiao overwhelmed Cotto and stopped him late. Porter, 23, is back in camp as Pacquiao puts the final touches on his training for a May 7 with “Sugar” Shane Mosley, and he says that Pacquiao has been better this time around.

Porter: “He’s picking it up, man, he’s looking good. I think Manny’s a strong, fast fighter, very quick. I think he’s going to use his quickness and his speed. I think he’s going to wear Mosley down. … I don’t see Shane being stopped. He’s never been stopped before. But I think if anyone’s gonna do it, it’ll be Manny.”

Here’s another video of Pacquiao working his abs yesterday with strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza overseeing the workout.

Maidana beats Morales in dramatic bout

By Admin  //  Morales vs Maidana  //  No Comments

moralesmaidanafightresult 300x194 Maidana beats Morales in dramatic boutWhen a fight between Erik Morales and lightweight champ Juan Manuel Marquez wound up not being finalized because Marquez decided to sit out, waiting for a possible fight with Manny Pacquiao, Morales had an idea.

He and Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Eric Gomez were on the phone going over possible opponents and, one by one, they were either not available or not to Morales’ liking.

Finally, Morales told Gomez he had an idea. He wanted to fight “that guy from Argentina, that good puncher. I know how to beat him.”

Morales was talking about brawler Marcos Maidana, who had knocked out Victor Ortiz in 2009 in a big upset and pushed junior welterweight titlist Amir Khan to the brink in a decision loss in a fantastic December slugfest that was named the Boxing Writers Association of America fight of the year in 2010.

Gomez thought Morales was crazy. The staff at Golden Boy thought the same. But Morales insisted. He wanted the fight.

Maidana was a willing participant and that is what they did. There were cries in some quarters that it was a slaughter, that Maidana would crush the once-great former three-division champion and Mexican icon.

Morales, after all, retired in 2007 after four consecutive losses. And when he came out of retirement in 2010, he fought three times, won three times, but did not overly impress anyone.

But he sure impressed on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, where 7,154 fans (mostly of Morales) watched him turn back the clock — despite losing a majority decision in a clear fight of the year candidate that lived up to the HBO PPV card’s “Action Heroes” billing. (The fight, along with the Robert Guerrero-Michael Katsidis and Nobuhiro Ishida-James Kirkland undercard bouts, will be replayed on HBO Latino at 10 p.m. ET Friday.)

Morales lived up to that old boxing adage that is not always true, but was on this night: Every great champion has one more big performance left in him.

“A lot of people said this was a mismatch and a wipeout, but Morales said he saw something in Maidana and he was right even though he didn’t get the decision,” Golden Boy promoter Richard Schaefer said. “It was a great fight.”

The drama began immediately because Morales had to fight virtually the entire bout with a badly swollen right eye, which blew up after getting nailed with an uppercut in the opening minute of combat.

But Morales, a former champion at junior featherweight, featherweight and junior lightweight, has always been a warrior.

He was undeterred.

“I fought with my heart and with Mexico,” Morales said.

“This was my toughest fight ever,” Maidana said. “But I knew it would be, so I prepared for that.”

There was outstanding action throughout the bout. There was great ebb and flow. Maidana won the early rounds, but Morales got into a rhythm as the fight wore on. He opened up big-time in the fifth round, when he got Maidana in serious trouble along the ropes as he snapped his head back.

As they traded fierce shots, the crowd was on its feet and chanting “Mexico! Mexico! Mexico” as Morales (51-7, 35 KOs) peppered Maidana (30-2, 27 KOs) with hard right hands. He also hurt Maidana with an uppercut at the end of the sixth round and had him in trouble again.

If you did not know it was 2011, you could swear you were watching the Morales of old, the one who waged a sensational trilogy with Marco Antonio Barrera and Manny Pacquiao — whose last loss was to Morales in 2005.

“He turned back the clock and he showed what he still has,” Schaefer said. “He went toe-to-toe with one of the hardest punchers in the sport. We saw the old Erik Morales tonight, no question about it.”

The upset seemed to be brewing and the crowd seemed to be able to sense it. Morales wobbled Maidana in the eighth round, but Maidana, despite breathing heavily, continued to press forward as he closed out the fight winning the final two rounds on all three official scorecards, which read 116-112, 116-112 and 114-114. ESPN.com also had it 114-114.

The crowd was not happy with the decision, raining boos down, but Maidana, who earned $500,000, was overjoyed as he picked up a vacant interim junior welterweight title for the second time in his career.

“I wanted a strong fight, but I trained to fight,” Maidana said.

“Morales is a good, strong fighter. He should continue to fight. The fight was close, but I came out strong at the end. He had a lot of technique.”

Morales, who made $250,000 in base purse but will make more from Mexican television revenue and a percentage of the American pay-per-view profits, did not sound like a fighter headed back to retirement after such a spirited performance.

“I’m gonna do what the people want me to do — a rematch,” Morales said.

Maidana, standing next to him in the ring, was open to the idea.

“I’ll give you a rematch,” he said. “Any time. Tomorrow.”

But Maidana also said he wanted a fight with Marquez, who put the kibosh on his trainer, Nacho Beristain, training Maidana. That forced Maidana to find a new trainer in Rudy Perez, another of Mexico’s top cornermen, just as he was supposed to open training camp in Mexico.

Morales thought he should have won.

“I’m a good fighter from Tijuana,” he boasted. “I think it was a close fight, but to give him a clean win is ridiculous. What did you see? I think I won the fight. My punches were crisper and they were better. I threw better punches.”

So what the heck did Morales see that made him want to fight Maidana?

“I still have speed and velocity and, more importantly, dignity and heart,” he said of his decision. “I thought I was better than him.”

It could have gone either way.

“Some have Morales winning, some have Maidana,” Schaefer said. “But it was definitely a fight of the year candidate. The people who saw this were treated to something special.”

Morales vs. Maidana: Who Will Make It To The Next Level?

By Admin  //  Morales vs Maidana  //  No Comments

erik morales Morales vs. Maidana: Who Will Make It To The Next Level? On April 9th, two brave warriors will step in the square-circle to battle and try to win a bloody war that will open a big door in the sport of boxing. Argentine’s Marcos “El Chino” Maidana (29-2, 27 KO’s) failed to conquer Britain’s Amir Khan and lost the fight by unanimous last December at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nev.

Watch Morales Vs. Maidana!

Although Maidana failed to finish Amir Khan in the last few rounds, he proved that he can be a major threat to any champion. Maidana is a warrior with tremendous punching power. He’s a walking tank with several types of dangerous missiles.
On the opposite corner we have Mexican legend Erik “El Terrible” Morales (51-6, 35 KO’s) who’s coming off a unanimous victory over Francisco Lorenzo. Erik Morales has a terrific heart and is extremely motivated for this fight. Morales wants to prove to the world that he is ready to conquer other champions in the welterweight division. The majority may be doubting this champion; but that’s what warriors do, they fight and prove critics wrong.

It is obvious that the majority of the boxing world are favoring the Argentine warrior Marcos Maidana over Erik Morales. I don’t blame them at all. Erik Morales hasn’t proved much in his last few fights. He didn’t look good at all when he fought Jose Alfaro last year in Mexico. This doesn’t mean Erik will lose his battle on April 9; but it makes it quite hard to believe for others based on his past few fights.

Before I break down this interesting fight, I want to make it clear to the critics and other people that in the world of boxing nothing is permanent. Like Jeff Mayweather has told me before, “You’re as good as your last fight.” Many people say hard-work pays off; while I say hard-work only gives you hope and confidence. One of the few elements a warrior needs in order to pull off the victory.

Marcos Maidana has a nice old school style. He comes forward and delivers powerful hooks and upper-cuts. Like I’ve stated before, this Argentine beast reminds of a Henry Armstrong. Ironically, El Chino has a nice clean-messy style that works for him. Maidana doesn’t care if your Superman or Godzilla, he will try to destroy you no matter what.

Erik Morales is no different, he is a tough warrior and would also fight a Godzilla or Superman if he had to. However, he would fight them with more strategies and different techniques. Morales would use his jab and movement to try to set up some powerful combinations and win by points.

I’m already impressed with El Terrible. About a year ago I interviewed Erik and I asked him about his future and he said, “Honestly, I’m not ready for big fights yet. I need two or three fights and then hopefully fight in Vegas next year around April.”

I find it quite amazing that Erik Morales has passed every test and is fighting here in Vegas like he planned.

With respect, I believe Maidana will pull off the victory by TKO in the later rounds. As late as the tenth or eleventh round. However, I’m aware that Morales is a bigger threat to Maidana than what most people think. Erik Morales is a major under-dog for this fight; people should consider thinking twice before doubting this Mexican warrior.

There are several reasons why I believe Marcos Maidana will successfully conquer Erik Morales confidence and later earn the victory by TKO. However, I will only stress four reasons why Maidana is the one that will be going home with a big smile on his face.

Reason No. 1: Marcos Maidana is young, confident and fearless. He did great against Amir Khan and lost by split-decision from my point of view. Maidana proved that he can take several combinations from quick fighters and still be able to land tremendous punches that could knock-out a tiger. Maidana never gives up and is willing to walk through any dangerous storm in order to find the right key to open the right door. Erik Morales is no Amir Khan and has lost his speed and movement. Morales will need to be careful when trying to deliver powerful punches; he may get caught and feel the powerful force of an Argentine missile. Erik got caught in the first round when battling in the ring against Willie Limond and caused El Terrible to be off-balance for around two seconds. Two seconds is more than enough for a fighter to land two good powerful hooks or upper-cuts.

Reason No. 2: Erik Morales has been flat-footed with poor movement in his last three fights. Even if he had great punching power, a warrior always needs to have decent defense in order to win. The majority know that the shield defeats the sword. Fighters without defense usually end up offering their heart to their rival. If Erik improved his defense, body and head-movement, then he may get a chance to make the fight his. Without speed, movement or defense, I don’t see Erik avoiding Maidanas power or winning the fight.

Reason No. 3: Marcos Maidana has fought better quality fighters in his last few fights. Fighters like Amir Khan, Victor Ortiz and Victor Cayo. Maidana will be prepared and ready for Morales. While Morales may be a little rusty or cold if he steps in the ring with the wrong game-plan.

Reason No. 4: The New Erik Morales still has great heart and confidence, but also has slow foot-work and a slow jab. Maidana won’t have a problem chasing Erik Morales in the later rounds if Erik shows up out of shape. Marcos Maidana was in great shape when he fought Amir Khan, if he prepares as good for this battle and comes with the perfect game-plan, he could end up pulling an amazing victory by TKO. When Erik Morales tries to fight a fighter toe-toe, he usually ends up trading punches and that’s something you don’t want to do when fighting this Argentine beast who’s only fear is to not satisfy the fans. If Erik offers his chin around two-three times a round, Maidana may take advantage of that and use his explosive upper-cuts to try to conquer Erik. Morales will have to keep his hands up and move around the ring a lot to avoid Maidanas power. It sounds quite difficult but anything is possible in boxing with the right training. Morales will also need to use his jab to create distance and trap Maidana at times. A great combination for Erik to use against Maidana would be the jab with powerful body shots. Since we all witnessed what Khan did to Maidana with that clean body-shot. If Erik Morales comes prepare and uses the right techniques, he could possibly win the fight by unanimous decision and shock the world.

Both of these warriors are exciting to watch. However, only one warrior will successfully walk through the storm; while the other warrior may end up doing something wrong and fail to use the right technique to avoid the power of the storm. April 9th will be a great night for boxing; this fight should be full of fireworks and action.

Fight Night Predictions: Morales vs. Maidana

By Admin  //  Morales vs Maidana  //  No Comments

“This is a very, very important fight for me, It’s even more important because he’s the favorite. I think I’m going to win this fight; I know I can win this fight. Remember that I chose Maidana. I think I’m technically a lot better than he is. No one gives me a chance to win. That’s great. So if I win, you should give me all the credit in the world.” – Erik Morales, quotes from the Ring Magazine through an interpreter

So, can he do it?

Watch Morales vs Maidana Live Stream Online!

This Saturday, HBO will televise the return of Erik Morales after a four-year hiatus. The former champion will face Marcos Maidana for the vacant junior welterweight WBA interim title in MGM Las Vegas. Morales will attempt to capture a record 4th-divisionial title, which no Mexican fighter has ever done.

Many, if not all boxing pundits have already gave Morales no chance in winning this match. Prior to this fight, the Tijuana native has suffered painful setbacks against Pacquiao and Diaz and the boxing world thought they’ve seen the last from “El Terrible”. In a surprising move, Morales came back in 2009 and victorious in all his attempts. However, after observing his latest performances, I believe that Morales should have stayed retired.

Marcus Maidana has slowly made a name from himself in the past couple of years. His reputation is arguably among the toughest in their division. One of his most outstanding feats was against a highly favorable Victor Ortiz in which he stopped in 6 rounds. This has catapulted him to the elite fighters south of the welterweight division immediately.

What if Morales wins?

That would be a great achievement on his part and it would march a history for the Mexicans. This could be some sort of a renaissance period for the future hall of famer. Erik Morales is among the few fighters which I adore the most but the long layoff and the brutal losses to Manny Pacquiao may still linger into his mind. Marcus Maidana is among the up-and-coming fighters today and he will take full advantage about this opportunity. Keep in mind also that Morales has not fought at the 140lb division at all.

My Prediction: Unless Morales regains his old self confidence (he was the last man to defeat Pacquiao), Maidana will win via TKO or KO after 5 rounds. I see a one-sided performance from Marcos Maidana.

Erik Morales: I Will Make History By Beating Maidana

By Admin  //  Uncategorized  //  No Comments

ACTION HEROES MGM 091 300x199 Erik Morales: I Will Make History By Beating MaidanaErik “El Terrible” Morales wants more than anything to make history on Saturday when he faces Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. With the interim-WBA 140-pound title on the line, Morales wants to become the first Mexican boxer to win titles in four weight divisions. Morales is a former super bantamweight, featherweight and super featherweight champion. Maidana, 27-years-old, has 29 wins, 27 knockouts and two defeats. Morales, at 34, has a record of 51-6 and 35 knockouts.

Morales has not fought in Las Vegas since 2006, when he was knocked out by Manny Pacquiao.

“I’ve been looking forward to this fight with the hope of seeing myself become a world champion for the fourth time. I will get it right and win, I’m sure of it. I will make history. It brings me a lot of joy to be back in Las Vegas, to be back in an interesting fight on HBO pay-per-view. There are many who have doubted me, but they’ve had very little credibility,” Morales said.
