I’ve been a Mayweather fan for many years now, as the heir apparent to Roy Jones, Floyd has everything that Roy had plus better

boxing fundamentals and technique, also Floyd thinks quicker and better on his feet than Roy did.

To me Floyd beating Ortiz, and Pacquiao doesn’t make him exclusive. Don’t get me wrong these two on Floyd’s record is a GREAT thing but Floyd will still only look ordinary to MOST of his naysayers, haters, and uninformed fight fans. If Sergio Martinez continues to win, and I have no doubt he will, that’s the fight that Floyd should go out on at…..160lbs – not 154lbs and by winning that fight Floyd can be considered up there with the greatest fighters of all time.

Floyd Sr. has said that “lil’ Floyd has nothing to prove” and I rebut that with “when a fighter has ‘nothing to prove’ it’s time to hang em up”. A fighter ALWAYS has something to prove! That mentality keeps a fighter focused and able to protect himself at all times. I unlike many others don’t hold ‘who Floyd hasn’t fought’ against him because other fighters who have fought the same guys Floyd fought gained a lot of fame, money and approval for doing so. As for the fighting for money rather than legacy argument that always comes up regarding Floyd, here’s my take – I work for a living and I’m not trying to make minimum wage doing so and NOBODY condemns me for trying to make TOP DOLLAR. Are fighters any different??

The legacy of a fighter is in PROGRESS while that fighter is fighting and is MADE once the fighter hangs them up for good and all of the beans are counted. Does Floyd’s legacy need Ortiz? Pacquiao? Martinez?

Ortiz is on the schedule for September 17th, this year, expect Floyd to put on his best performance adding to his legacy.
To me Pacquiao who is really a natural lightweight does little for Floyd’s legacy as will surely be the case after Mayweather beats him and the ease he will do it with. Afterwards a Martinez battle will be expected.

Of all the “Face Off” promos we’ve seen, this one looks like it’s shaping up to be the most scripted and goofy. Neither man can really help it — both love to act, but clearly weren’t part of their high school’s drama club, and have never done any community theater. But they are confident in their abilities, and willing to go the extra mile to put emphasis on a single line or point.

For instance, I like how Victor Ortiz holds up his index finger to hammer home his quote, “Not this one.”

But let me tell you something. (Serious business.) When I was nine years old, I always knew that someday I would see this “Face Off” promo for Victor Ortiz, who was five at the time, defending his welterweight belt against Floyd Mayweather Jr, who was 15. I just knew it. The wind spoke to me, as it did to King Terenas Menethil II when he named his son Arthas. I was also in the forests of Lordaeron when I felt this come upon me, as Terenas was.

Boxer Victor Ortiz is starting to demand respect

Welterweight boxer Victor Ortiz is barely beginning his run of fame and fortune and already there’s a book title just waiting for him: “From Living in Trailers to Flying on Lear Jets.”

Ortiz is the current World Boxing Council champion, having knocked the title out of Andre Berto’s able hands in April. He is only 24, just beginning to prompt nods of recognition in the fancy suites at HBO and Showtime and is already in position to make a huge wave in the sport.

When he beat Berto, Ortiz seemed to become perfect fodder for Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s next step. Which is: 1) Get a decent warmup fight before actually taking on Manny Pacquiao; or 2) Get a comfortable-feeling fight that guarantees a nice payday and allows you to leave the impression that you actually want to fight Pacquiao.

So Ortiz and Mayweather Jr. will fight Sept. 17 in Las Vegas, and the boxing world will do what the boxing world always does — spend all its time talking about whether Pacquiao, finally, will be next. The thought that Ortiz actually might win will be little discussed.

The designated opponent in these matchups, in this case Ortiz, can react one of two ways. He can go through the phony promotional motions and dream of the fancy paycheck he will soon be able to see through swollen eyes. Or, he can get fighting mad about the lack of respect he is receiving.

The latter is Ortiz’s current stance, and it is especially irksome to him now, because he is the champion, not Mayweather. Yet Mayweather is not only an unbeaten legend, but also is holding the boxing world hostage as it remains hopeful of seeing the only true mega-fight currently possible.

It shouldn’t be hard to get Ortiz fighting mad. Until recently, life in general had taken care of that.

He is the middle son of Mexican immigrant parents. Dad was a truck driver and mom was a cook at a homeless shelter. He was born and raised in Garden City, Kan., with older sister Carmen and younger brother Temo. When he was 7, his mother, Manuela, left for another man. Six years later, his father, Victor, took off too.

“I can still remember it,” says Temo. “We came home from school one day and my mother was gone. That was it. Just gone.”

According to Temo, dad Victor would also be gone for weeks and months at a time, and eventually left for good when he was 11 and Victor Jr. was 13.

“I call my brother Junior,” Temo says, “but nobody else can or will.”

Dad, according to both Temo and Victor, was an alcoholic who beat them up frequently and stayed around long enough to introduce Victor to boxing.

“There was a kid named Lalo who beat up Victor pretty good,” Temo recalls. “That made my dad very angry, so he took Victor to the gym.”

Victor kept at it through more than 100 amateur fights. Carmen got pregnant when she was 15, but the three tried somehow to stay together, sometimes living in neighbors’ barns. They relied greatly on the parents of friends for food and shelter.

“It was scary,” Temo says. “You were always thinking about what was next, what was your next meal.”

Victor says, “I was like a stray dog.”

He says that sometimes, they would use crowbars to break into their old house, boarded up by Social Services.

“My parents also had an old trailer,” he says, “and we would go there, and try to break in. But it was 10-12 miles away. I’d just run up there, anyway.”

When he was 14, Victor got a job at Burger King and would call his brother and sister when leftovers were available.

“That saved us, many days,” Temo says.

Eventually, Victor Ortiz’s boxing skills were noted. He first moved to Denver, where Carmen lived and where a boxing opportunity presented itself.

“I cried when he said he was leaving,” Temo says. “He told me I’d be all right with the foster family and said he would come back to get me and be my guardian when he turned 18.”

That’s exactly what Victor Ortiz did.

Now, Temo runs a successful trucking business in Garden City, thanks to an initial investment from his brother. Carmen still lives in Denver, and Victor is on the verge of cashing checks with seven digits several times a year.

Temo decided recently to seek out his parents. The response he says he got from his mother was less than satisfying. It was worse from his father.

“I didn’t want much,” Temo says. “He never once said he was proud of me, of doing well in my business. It just breaks your heart.”

Temo talked Victor into trying. Same result.

“He spends his time trying to make you feel bad for him,” Victor says. “He’s pushing 70 and he’s just a bitter old man.”

There has been much more sweet than bitter for the possible future standard-bearer of boxing’s welterweight division. After Ortiz won his WBC title, he was honored by the governor of Kansas. And recently, during his travels to promote the Mayweather fight, he got a ride on a Lear jet. He loved it, but he didn’t forget his roots.

“They had a stewardess, serving us sandwiches,” he says. “When she got done, I offered to help her wash the dishes, but she wouldn’t let me.”

Lost in the excitement, joy and speculation which has been the return of former pound-for-pound champ Floyd Mayweather Jr., has been the actual fight he will be in against welterweight champion Victor Ortiz on September 17th.

Ending what will amount to a 16 month layoff, many see this fight as a warm up to a potential mega-fight against current pound-for-pound champ Manny Pacquaio.

But blessed with power, speed, desire and a southpaw stance, Victor Ortiz may put a few wrinkles into the plans of the now 34 year-old Mayweather.

3. Manage the Pace

While he might not have the most crowd pleasing style, Floyd Mayweather’s ability to manage the speed and pace of a fight has been a major part of his winning all 41 of his bouts.

If Manny Pacquiao is an exploding bomb, Mayweather is a trained and lethel sniper, assessing and studying his opponents before taking them out with well planned and accurate shots.

2. Keep the Distance

Floyd Mayweather is a master at keeping distance and he’ll need that against Victor Ortiz.

Victor Ortiz (29-2-2) is not afraid to take any crap from Floyd Mayweather, Jr. He visibly showed no fear and was surprisingly believable when he said that he wanted to “smack” Floyd during their press conference kicker. The young WBC World Welterweight Champion played the role of young-fighter-overearger-to-prove-that-he-can-beat-a-legend-and-become-the-sport’s-next-mainstream-star perfectly. He wasn’t mincing words when he declared that he’ll fight Manny Paquiao after he beats Mayweather.

His frustration was well justified during the conference because of the slew of questions circling around the potential Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. Questions about how Mayweather (41-0) was going to handle his southpaw style were replaced with questions about whether Mayweather was willing to fight Pacquiao next year.

Mayweather, on the other hand, was content on playing Rocky Balboa in Rocky VI (or “Rocky Balboa”). He was thankful for the support and sounded at peace while reflecting on his career. I’m not questioning the sincerity of his sudden epiphany, but it’s possible it could be just a show of character sympathy given the legal mess he’s in right now.

If there’s one thing we can’t knock Mayweather for, it’s his willingness to fight a young, hungry champion in his prime. When the news first broke out that he was going to fight Ortiz, the first thought that came to my mind was, “Are you sure he’s fighting Victor Ortiz and not Tito?”

Mayweather wants a challenge and found the right opponent for it. Everybody knows that Mayweather has difficulty fighting southpaws and rugged brawlers — which Ortiz both is. Ortiz has a vicious right uppercut that can send Floyd sprawling to the canvas. Another advantage he has is youth. Floyd hasn’t fought for over a year. Age has slowed him down and it’ll take time for him to get his rhythm back. It was apparent in his fight against Mosley that Floyd has lost a step.

But Floyd is still the smartest fighter out there. He’ll neutralize Ortiz’s power and aggressiveness by taking away the angles. Floyd will keep turning him and by the second half of the bout Ortiz will tire from hitting air. I believe that Mayweather already has a game plan for Ortiz. He didn’t pick him as his next opponent for nothing. Mayweather has already seen the holes and knows he can exploit them.

This match is exciting because Ortiz moves in only one direction — forward. He’ll make it a fight in the early rounds much like Ricky Hatton did. But it won’t be enough to stop the inevitable – a Mayweather – Pacquiao fight early next year.
